Salem District Town and Country Planning

The Government in its G.O.Ms.No.420 H&UD Deptdt/10.06.93 Notified Salem Local Planing Area the under section 10(1) of Town and Country Planning Act, 1971. Finally Salem Local Planning Area was confirmed with old Salem Municipal Area and 154 Surrounding Village under section 10(4) of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971 in G.O.No.56 H&UD Dept dated 10.02.97. The extent of the Salem Local Planning Area is 675.59Sq.Km. and its population is 1774122 as per 2 Census. Salem Local Planning Authority was constituted with District Collector as Chairman and Joint Director of Town and couutryPlaning as Member Secretary as in G.O.Ms.No.759 H&UD Deptdt 01.09.93 and G.O.Ms.No.282 H&UD Deptdt 19.08.97. The Salem Local Planning Area consists of Salem Municipal Corporation, 8 Town Panchayats and 7 Panchayat Unions.

Draft Master Plan 2041 for Salem Local Planning Area:

The first master plan for the old Salem Local Planning Area (LPA) was prepared and came to enactment following a Government order in the year 2005. The master plan was prepared for an area of 643.17 Sq.Km covering the old Salem Municipal Area and 154 Surrounding Villages and it provided the land use framework for the future development of the old Salem LPA upto the year 2011.

Now the Draft of the next master plan 2041 for the expanded Salem LPA has been prepared for an area of 1273.20 Sq.Km using GIS platforms under the AMRUT sub-scheme of the Government of India. The Government of Tamil Nadu has accorded its consent to notify the Draft Master Plan 2041 of the expanded Salem LPA vide G.O.(Ms).No.8, Housing and Urban Development Department, Dated: 13.01.2024, for the public to view its content and give their objections and suggestions, if there is any, to the Draft plan.

People can learn and know about what a Master Plan is and about the Draft plan prepared for the expanded Salem LPA by visiting the website www.salemlpamasterplan.com . The Draft Master Plan consists of Proposed Land use for each and every land parcels within the Salem LPA based on which future development will only be regulated. Hence the public can check the Proposed Land use for their own lands in the above said website and record their objections/suggestions in the website itself.
